Dr. Rose Spencer Gibbs is a Retired Department Head of Library formerly with the York Region District School Board in Ontario, Canada. She has had a wide range of experiences in Education and community work in Canada and the Caribbean. Dr. Gibbs previously taught in Jamaica and Guyana and was a school librarian and lecturer in Montreal. She was for several years an Education Officer with the Ministry of Education in Jamaica supervising rural primary schools. She spent a year as Acting Librarian and lecturer at Mico University College in Kingston, Jamaica. Dr. Gibbs is a graduate of the University of the West Indies, in Kingston, Jamaica, Queen’s University, Harvard University and McGill University. She represents the Alliance of Educators for Black Students (AEBS) on the Board of the Ontario Alliance of Black School Educators (ONABSE). As a member of ONABSE’s Higher Education Commission, she has been a co-facilitator for the York University/ONABSE practicum for teacher candidates and B.Ed. students. Dr. Gibbs has been a recipient of Black History Month awards for the City of Markham, Ontario.  Dr. Gibbs is currently an independent researcher and writer. Island of Plantations is her first book.

The subjects of this blog represent a variety of interests and reflect my different identities. I write about the Black experience in Canada as well as about Jamaica, in particular the history of Jamaica. Excerpts from my book, Island of Plantations, are also highlighted here.
